Between late July and Halloween, both clocks tick faster than usual, and they rarely tick in sync.
Two Calendars, One County
The obvious way to plan a Howard County weekend is to pick a side. Cobblestones or amphitheater. Sit-down tasting menu or tailgate before a show. That framing misses what makes this stretch of the year worth staying home for. The dining event happening countywide, the fall lineup at Merriweather, and the Main Street calendar in Ellicott City are all peaking at the same time, and each one gets better when you treat it as part of a two-stop night rather than a single destination.
Start with the anchor that spans all of it. Howard County's summer Restaurant & Craft Beverage Weeks runs July 27–Aug. 9, offering diners double cash back through a rewards app. More than 45 participating restaurants across Columbia, Elkridge, Ellicott City, Maple Lawn, Laurel, and beyond are running special menus. That is the reason to lock in reservations this week rather than next.
What Restaurant Weeks Actually Looks Like On The Ground
The county-wide framing hides how differently the event plays out depending on where you sit down. Manor Hill Tavern in Ellicott City is not competing with Peter Chang in Downtown Columbia for the same table. They are two different nights.

Past and recurring participants give a good sense of what to expect: Manor Hill Tavern and Victoria Gastro Pub for elevated pub fare and craft beer pairings, Cured for a wine-forward small-plates experience and Pupatella for Neapolitan-style pizza. Add in neighborhood favorites like Cilantro's Neighborhood Cantina, Celia's Cuban Cuisine, and Bushel and a Peck Kitchen & Bar, and the practical planning question stops being where to eat and starts being which side of the county the rest of your evening belongs on.
One data point worth the reservation calendar: Visit Howard County announced its one-time waiver of the participation fees for this winter's Howard County Restaurant & Craft Beverage Weeks. It was also announced that Local HoCo Open Rewards app participants who dine at participating establishments will earn 10 percent cash back versus the normal five percent. That is a straightforward doubling for residents who bother to download the app before the check arrives.

Main Street's Fall Shape
Old Ellicott City has published its fall calendar, and it tells you more about how to plan a Saturday than any listicle of "top things to do." The dates cluster, then leave gaps.
- Aug. 4 through late summer — Paint It! Ellicott City brings color to the cobblestone streets each June, as artists set up their easels throughout town for this annual plein air tradition. Watch painters at work as they capture the charm and character of historic Ellicott City in real time. Then, explore the exhibit of juried artists' work on display in Gallery I at HoCo Arts and the Open Paint exhibit at Howard County Welcome Center, on display through August.
- Sept. 19 — Main Street Music Festival, 12:00 PM EDT, Main Street, Ellicott City
- Oct. 3 — Wizarding Weekend, 12:00 PM EDT, Main Street, Ellicott City
- Oct. 31 — Trick or Treat on Main Street, 4:00 PM EDT
If you live in Ellicott City, the Music Festival weekend is the one worth blocking off. It is the last outdoor day on Main Street before the calendar starts leaning on interior shops and evening events. Between those dated weekends, the Saturday default is still the farmers market. Old Ellicott City Farmers Market is at Tiber Park, Ellicott City, MD, Saturdays from 9:00 AM onwards.
Manor Hill Tavern deserves a note of its own because it is doing double duty this stretch. Pizza Monday at Manor Hill Tavern, 3733 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, and the Manor Hill Tavern Happy Hour are the weekday routines locals use to skip the Main Street parking scramble on event Saturdays. The tavern is also one of the more visible Restaurant Weeks participants on the Ellicott City side.
Merriweather's Fall Shape
The Downtown Columbia calendar runs on a completely different pattern. Instead of Saturdays, it runs on show nights, and the fall lineup is the tightest it has been in a year. Working forward from Restaurant Weeks:

If you have lived nearby for more than a season or two, you already know the traffic pattern for a weekend festival. The under-used trick is timing dinner to the show, not around it.
What Is Actually New At Merriweather District
The most useful thing to know for a resident who has not walked through the District in a few months: two of the anchor restaurant openings are still in front of you, not behind you. Merriweather District is already home to many restaurants and retailers, but Mighty Quinn's BBQ and Gyusan will also open soon. Both are listed on Juniper's neighborhood roster under "Who's Open," alongside the tenants who have been there long enough to feel permanent: Banditos, The Blackwall Barn & Lodge, GameOn Bar + Arcade, Toastique, Busboys and Poets, Clove and Cardamom, Cured 18th & 21st, Peter Chang, The Charmery, The Food Market, Dok Khao Thai Eatery, Eggspectation, Medium Rare, Smashing Grapes, The Angry Jerk.
The other addition worth knowing about sits inside the Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel on the Lake Kittamaqundi side. Located along the lakeshore inside the Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel, lāk offers a stylish dining experience centered around thoughtfully crafted food and beverage offerings. With its fashionable atmosphere and scenic views of Lake Kittamaqundi, lāk has become a welcoming gathering place for hotel guests and locals looking to enjoy quality cuisine and warm hospitality. For a resident, the value is not the hotel angle. It is having a lakeside patio option that is not competing with the Merriweather Row crowd on a show night.

A Resident's Pairing Playbook
The reason to think in pairings rather than single stops is that the county rewards it. A few that work this fall:
- Farmers market Saturday + Main Street Music Festival evening. Morning at Tiber Park, wander for lunch, come back for the 12 PM stage on Sept. 19.
- Restaurant Weeks tasting menu + Mt. Joy at Merriweather. Dinner at Cured or Peter Chang, walk to the venue. Sept. 18 is the cleanest test case.
- Wizarding Weekend afternoon + Manor Hill Tavern dinner. Both on the Ellicott City side, so you avoid crossing 29 twice. Oct. 3.
- All Things Go single-day + Lake Kittamaqundi wind-down at lāk or Offshore. Festival crowds thin by the time the lakeshore turns quiet.
- Howard County Fair afternoon + a Restaurant Weeks late reservation. Fair runs in August; the last night of Restaurant Weeks is Aug. 9.
The through-line: Restaurant Weeks pairs naturally with everything else Howard County has going on. Diners can extend the night with a show in Columbia, often called Maryland's Live Performance Capital, catch a concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion, or stroll historic Ellicott City's Main Street or Savage Mill for shopping before or after a meal.

The reason the last weekend of July through the first weekend of October matters more than any other stretch of the Howard County calendar is compression. The dining promotion, the festival lineup, the Main Street event schedule, and the Merriweather concert slate all peak inside a ten-week window. If you live here and you spend that window driving to Fells Point or Union Market for a night out, you are working harder than you need to.
